The term leadership has many implications to various people. When some people consider the
definition of leadership, they think of it as a quality related to political power or personal wealth.
Other people define leadership as being able to
reach the goal of manager, CEO, or Mayor. These definitions of
leadership are far off of the true meaning of leadership. It is true,
that some valuable things can be learned from studying the successes of
CEO’s or politicians, but leadership isn’t the main thing
that you can learn.
If leadership doesn’t necessarily meaning
have a position with power, how do we then define it? Honestly, if you
are striving to be a leader, that is the first thing that you need to
do – define what you want to achieve. You specifically need to
know what you want to become.
The best definition of leadership revolves around
your aspirations of “becoming” not just acquiring a new
skill. Some leaders have the desire to become people that are
influential. Others have the goal of getting people to do what you
don’t wan to do. And there are even some leaders who motivate
people what the people should be doing.
Personally, I think motivation is an essential
factor for leadership. A good definition of leadership will also
include some aspect of influence. This should be one of the main
questions on a leader’s mind: How can I influence others?
Leadership in these parameters can happen in our families, schools,
workplaces, and businesses. How we influence others can be very
powerful.
If you want to be a successful leader, it is
essential that you determine what your definition of leadership is. You
may want to also think about the qualities that you feel are necessary
to be the leader you want to become. This merits a few moments, because
it will determine who you will become, and essentially, your future.
Personally, I believe leadership is the capability
to influence others to attain certain goal. Not only is a leader
influential towards a follower’s actions, but also thoughts
through the art of persuasion, motivation, innovation, and teamwork.
